I wanted to give home roasting a try without making any major investment. Needless to say, the cheapest option outside of using the stove top or oven was an electric popcorn popper. I watched a few videos on YouTube and gave it a try. The beans appeared mostly evenly roasted, some were a bit darker than others but it didn't smell off. When I made a cup using them however, it tasted awful! What could I have possibly done wrong?ย

Did you, by chance, allow the beans to go through the degassing process? If not, that would be your problem! A lot of beginner roasters skip this step or aren't properly guided on it.ย

Ahh! This explains everything! I did not allow them to degas and now I can almost guarantee this was the issue. I attempting it again since posting this only I was not able to use them right away. I believe the were sitting in a loose-lidded jar for nearly 6 days before I made use of them and it tasted so much better.ย
