If all coffee beans contain caffeine, how is the caffeine removed?

A family friend told me that it is fake coffee and I know that isn't true. It is still REAL coffee but there must be some sort of process in which the beans have the caffeine removed from them. How is this done? Does anyone know?

I believe the beans are soaked in water prior to roasted. This same method is done with standard beans when you want to remove the acid.ย

I am not sure what the step by step process is but I know you do this when the coffee beans are still green.ย

There are different ways of doing this using different solutions but a lot of people these days opt for water processing. Filters are used to remove the caffeine. The beans are soaked whilst green and the water is then reused without the caffeine to soak fresh beans to preserve the flavor.ย

That seems like a lot of extra work just to remove it. I thought it was a lot easier of a process or there was just some sort of roast method used. I am going to have to check out the process and see it done. I am more curious now than I was before!

I did not know all that! I just knew there was soaking involved. Do you have any good videos of the process? I would like to see how much effort goes into this cause it seems like decaff is very cheap for what it is, if it is THIS involved!

Not sure about the process being shown in a video but this man articulates it well so you can understand the process and what takes place from beginning to end.
